The Forest Products Department at the University of Idaho recently dev
eloped a unique, hands-on, two-credit course entitled ''Wood - A Remar
kable Fiber'' to familiarize primary and secondary teachers with the h
arvesting, properties, uses, and manufacture of wood and wood products
. Science and technology as well as the human perspective (society) we
re carefully integrated to provide a balanced view of the forest produ
cts industry and societal needs. Course materials provided to the teac
hers included lecture notes, ideas for small group activities, experim
ents, and a ''wood bag.'' Tile course has been taught six times over t
he last 3 years and has been well received by teachers in Idaho, Monta
na, and Washington. Funding has been provided by the Idaho Forest Prod
ucts Commission, the University of Idaho, and the forest products indu
stry.
