Small-angle X-ray scattering of hydrophilic and hydrophobic SiO2 parti
cles were studied by a Kratky camera in a He atmosphere. The scatterin
g intensity functions of the hydrophilic and hydrophobic colloidal par
ticles are not very different; however, the primary intensity I-0 is c
onsiderably larger for hydrophobic particles. In hydrophobic silica su
spensions in benzene-n-heptane mixtures the SAXS parameters (K-P, Q, I
-0), the correlation length l(c) and the calculated distance distribut
ion function p(r) provide useful information about the aggregation and
the stability of colloidal dispersions in non-electrolyte media.
