The structure of polyaniline formed during polymerisation depends main
ly on the porous structure and the thickness of the montmorillonite la
yer as well as on the concentration and the anion of strong acid in so
lution. The electropolymerisation takes place in the micro- and macrop
ores of the clay mineral. Cationic dyes or cationic surfactants, built
in the montmorillonite layer, speed up the polymerisation and a compo
site poor in polyaniline formes. The formation of the composite in cyc
lic voltammetry and polymerisation can be interpreted in terms of the
mechanism suggested.
