The adsorption of chromium hydroxide sol on silica type adsorbents was
investigated by means of radioisotope tracer method. In the applied p
H range of 4.0-5.5 the adsorbent has a negative, while the sol has a p
ositive surface charge. Increasing the concentration of the electrolyt
es the amount of sol adsorbed at equilibrium decreases. Considering th
e effect of multivalent ions, it makes no difference whether the valen
cy of cation or anion is increased. The adsorption of the different ch
romium ions present in the solution must be taken into account as well
. The adsorption is significant from pH 4 in both cases. The adsorptio
n properties of the various products resulting from chromium ion hydro
lysis are similar to those of sol particles.
