F. Grodstein et al., POSTMENOPAUSAL HORMONE USE AND TOOTH LOSS - A PROSPECTIVE-STUDY, The Journal of the American Dental Association, 127(3), 1996, pp. 370-377
Nearly 32 percent of U.S. women aged 65 to 69 years have no teeth. Bec
ause some tooth loss may reflect systemic osteoporosis, and because es
trogen therapy seems to protect against osteoporosis, the authors exam
ined the risk of tooth loss relation to hormone use in a prospective s
tudy of 42,171 postmenopausal women. The risk of tooth loss was lower
in women who currently used hormones. Although few studies have examin
ed this issue, this research suggests that estrogen may reduce tooth l
oss.
