Abstract
Holding a license in a given profession does not guarantee competency. To help define criteria for periodic competency assessment of dentist s, the American Association of Dental Examiners assembled a committee in 1993. In this article, the authors outline the criteria the committ ee established for such assessments and discuss several assessment mod els proposed by the committee.
