In 1974 Klein suggested that anhedonia is the main symptom of endogeno
morphic depression. In an attempt to test Klein's hypothesis, we used
the Endogenomorphic subscale of the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depressi
on (HRSD) to dichotomize 97 patients with unipolar major depression in
to endogenomorphic and nonendogenomorphic subgroups. Anhedonia was rat
ed using the Physical Anhedonia Scale and the Fawcett-Clark Pleasure C
apacity Scale-Physical Pleasure. The endogenomorphic patients were sig
nificantly more anhedonic than the nonendogenomorphic patients, even w
hen the effect of depressive severity was controlled.
