We have melt-processed a series of Ag-sheathed Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 tapes wit
h compositions ranging from 2.18-2.0:2:1:1.9-2.0 (Bi:Sr:Ca:Cu) in 100%
O-2 (P-tot = 1 atm). These compositions were chosen since changing th
e Bi and Cu content varied the volume fraction of (Sr,Ca)(14)Cu24Ox an
d Bi-2(Sr,Ca)(4)O-x in the melt, which affected their volume fraction
in fully processed tape. The composition 2.1:2:1:1.95 yielded the most
homogeneous, highly aligned microstructure in fully processed tape an
d also had the highest J(c).
