Gastrointestinal infections cause considerable pediatric morbidity and
mortality throughout the world. A variety of agents are emerging as d
efinite or candidate pathogens, and ''established'' pathogens such as
Vibrio cholerae can reappear with new phenotypes (eg, the O139 antigen
) and virulence. In this article, we discuss recent developments in th
e etiology of various gastrointestinal disorders, focusing on diarrhea
, and review promising new therapies for childhood gastrointestinal in
fections.
