Rehabilitation clients enter treatment for alcohol and other drug abus
e at various stages of readiness to change. Some clients are well awar
e of their problems and claim they are ready to work on them. Others d
o not even agree that they have problems, feel coerced to enter treatm
ent, and do not see the need for change. It is important that treatmen
t should be congruent with clients' readiness for change. This article
describes a substance abuse treatment matching model based on the Pro
chaska and DiClemente's Stages of Change theory (Prochaska & DiClement
e, 1982).
