Interaction between poly-N-ethyl-4-vinylpyridinium bromide and polysty
rene latex particles, the surface elf which is covered with methacryli
c acid-polystyrene copolymer, was studied. The polycation adsorption o
il the particle surface was found to be a cooperative process which is
accompanied by interface interpolyelectrolyte complex: formation and
neutralization of the surface charge. In the adsorbed macromolecules,
about 75% of the polycation units form ionic contacts with negatively
charged groups of the lates surface, In the presence of the excess pol
ycation, tile surface charge become positive, which results in termina
tion of the polycation adsorption. (C) 1996 Academic Press, Inc.
