MACULAR SURGERY

The macula is the area of retina responsible for central, detailed vis ion, its importance for visual function being out of proportion to its small size. It is the site of several diseases,including age-related macular degeneration,the most common cause of blindness in the UK. Rec ent advances in microsurgical techniques have introduced the possibili ty of treatment for many previously untreatable macular diseases.
