PURPOSE: To describe a case of progressive outer retinal necrosis in a
human immunodeficiency virus negative immunosuppressed patient underg
oing treatment for graft-versus host disease after bone marrow transpl
antation. METHOD: Onset, course, and outcome of the patient's eye dise
ase were analyzed.RESULTS: Findings and course were typical for the re
cently described progressive outer retinal necrosis syndrome. CONCLUSI
ON: Progressive outer retinal necrosis is not limited to the acquired
immunodeficiency syndrome but may occur in patients immunocompromised
because of other conditions.
