Abstract
This article describes some preliminary results of the ecological part of the research project ''Nature conservation in managed forests': Ac cording to the data so far analysed, the species composition in manage d forests was more diverse than expected in polypores, epiphytic liche ns and bryophytes as well as in bryophytes growing on dead wood the di fferences in species composition between managed and old-growth forest s were surprisingly small. Threatened species classed as ''in need of moniroring'' were found in managed forests, in addition to species typ ical of old forests. The results suggest that the species associated w ith dead wood are relatively diverse when the total volume of decaying wood is roughly 20 m(3)/ha. However as the continuity of decaying woo d is difficult to ensure in managed forests, the long-term survival of these species is unpredictable.
