A new monomeric copper(II) complex with 2,2'-bipyridine (bpy) and beta
ine (bet), [Cu(bpy)(bet)(2)(H2O)](ClO4)(2) . H2O, has been prepared an
d characterized by X-ray crystallography. The complex crystallizes in
the triclinic space group P-1 with a = 8.859(2), b = 11.191(2), c = 14
.850(3) Angstrom, alpha = 91.41(1), beta = 97.19(1), gamma = 91.97(1)d
egrees, V = 1459.2(7) Angstrom(3), and Z = 2. The structure comprises
discrete cations [Cu(bpy)(bet)(2)(H2O)](2+) in which the metal atom is
coordinated in a distorted square-pyramidal environment by two oxygen
atoms from a pair of monodentate carboxylato ligands [Cu-O = 1.950(2)
Angstrom] acid two nitrogen atoms of a bidentate bpy ligand [Cu-N = 1
.997(3)-2.005(3) Angstrom] on the basal plane, and one aqua [Cu-O = 2.
267(3) Angstrom] ligand at the apical position.
