Nickel carbonate and magnesium carbonate were used as precursors of Ni
F2-MgF2 samples of various percentage compositions. The preparations o
btained were examined using X-ray spectroscopy, IR spectroscopy and ca
talytic tests. It was shown that NiF2 and MgF2 formed a common crystal
lattice of the rutile type. New Lewis acid centres appeared on the su
rface of the NiF2-MgF2 system which originated from the coordinatively
unsaturated Ni2+ ions. In addition, an increased number of redox or b
asic centres arising from the O-, F- or OH- groups on the surface of t
he studied preparations was also detected. The low catalytic activity
of the NiF2-MgF2 samples indicated the possibility of using this syste
m as a support rather than a catalyst.
