As a model for prebiotic sugar formation under neutral to acidic condi
tions, reactions of formaldehyde over hydrotalcite-type catalysts were
investigated. Heating an aqueous solution of formaldehyde at 140-200
degrees C for 12 h over Ni-Fe hydrotalcite-type catalyst afforded hydr
oxy-3,3-bis(hydroxymethyl)-gamma-butyrolactone selectively, a 5.8% yie
ld based on gas-liquid chromatographic analysis. The structure was ide
ntified by H-1 and (13)CNMR and H-1-C-13 HSQC, HMBC and C-13-C-13 2D I
NADEQUATE NMR experiments.
