1,2,3-Tri-t-butyl-6,13-pentacenequinone (1a) and 8,9,10-tri-t-butyl-5,
14-pentacenequinone (1b) were synthesized. The lowest excited singlet
states of both 1a,b bear pi pi nature strongly. Correspondingly 1a an
d 1b undergo photovalence isomerization to give the corresponding vale
ne type isomers. The interconversion between the naphtacenequinones an
d their valene isomers were reversible photochemically.
