The competition between charge transfer and proton transfer observed d
uring the dimethylsulfide chemical ionization mass spectrometry is exp
loited in order to discriminate PAH isomers undistinguishable in a gas
chromatographic separation. Optimal conditions are reached if the rea
ctant Proton Affinity (PA) is bracketed by the PAs of the isomer mixtu
re consistuents.
