Abstract
The effective splay-bend elastic constant Ids is studied by means of a n optical technique for a lyotropic nematic liquid crystal. The ratio between Ids and the usual Frank elastic constant found in this experim ent is positive and of the order of 1. This result agrees with the one obtained recently for thermotropic liquid crystals.
