We present the results of a free-electron-laser (FEL) experiment at 35
GHz, using a strongly relativistic electron beam (T=1.75 MeV). The el
ectron pulse length is 30 ns full width at half maximum with a peak cu
rrent of 400 A. The FEL is designed to operate in the high-gain Compto
n regime, with a negative coupling parameter (phi<0) leading to a stro
ng growth rate. More than 50 MW of rf power in the TE(11) mode (43 dB
gain) has been obtained with good reproducibility. The experimental re
sults are in good agreement with predictions made using the three-dime
nsional stationary simulation code SOLITUDE.
