Syntheses are described in which the functional groups contained in di
fferent molecules react with each other in an ordered sequence under c
ontrol of a palladium complex. The latter plays the role of activating
molecules and groups and causes them to react with selected substrate
s. Not only the type of substrate but also the site and direction of a
ttack and the spatial orientation of reactants are controlled by the m
etal complex; so, highly chemo- regio- and stereo-selective reactions
result. Various criteria adopted in order to induce the desired reacti
on to occur in the presence of competitive processes are discussed.
