The influence of phosphorus on microstructural evolution and phase sta
bility in type 316 Ti stainless steels has been found to be significan
t during high temperature exposure. Ageing of type 316 Ti + P steels i
n the temperature range 600-800 degrees C for times up to 4000 h has b
een found to result in an abundant precipitation of carbide phases fol
lowed by the formation of intermetallic compounds. This study shows th
at the presence of phosphorus noticeably changes the precipitation beh
aviour in type 316 Ti stainless steels. However, a partial redissoluti
on of some precipitate phases has been found to occur for long time tr
eatments at 800 degrees C.
