Abstract
IGOS (''Intelligent Interactive Data Input System for GOSSYM'') is an intelligent, query-based system that collects input data to initialize a simulation run for GOSSYM (GOSSYpium SIMulator). GOSSYM is a simula tion model of the development of the cotton plant. IGOS supports the i nput of partial or incomplete data. When not all details are known for a required input field, the system helps infer appropriate input. The system also includes an extensive hypertext help system that clarifie s the nature of the system queries. The system is an improvement over the current GOSSYM interface in two key ways. First, data input is int eractive, minimizing keyboard entry and reducing the learning curve fo r the user. Second, the IGOS system provides more information than is provided by the current interface. IGOS greatly facilitates the entry of input data for the simulation model. In addition to its usefulness within the scope of GOSSYM, the IGOS system will serve as an example f or other crop models and will permit more widespread use of simulation systems.
