Abstract
In both sexes, ten types of sensilla are found on the antennae of Homo eosoma electellum (Hulst.) : sensilla trichodea types I and II, basico nica, auricillica, coeloconica types I and III, chaetica, styloconica, squamiformia and Bohm's bristles. There are sexual differences in the numbers of sensilla The proboscis has five types of sensilla : chaeti ca, styloconica, basiconica types I and II, and basiconica in the food channel. Sensilla chaetica are scattered over the maxillary palps and sensilla coeloconica constitute a pit organ on the labial palps. The tarsi possess three types of sensilla chaetica. The ovipositor houses three types of sensilla trichodea and a single type of sensilla basico nica. H. electellum is distinguished from the european species, H. neu bulella (Den. & Schiff.) by the presence of a supplementary type of se nsilla trichodea (type II) and the absence of cupuliform organs on the antennae as well as by the existence of a supplementary type of sensi lla basiconica (type I) on the proboscis. The total num- bers of anten nal sensilla in both sexes are higher in H. electellum than in H. nebu lella. The results are discussed with regard to current hypotheses on the function of sensilla and biology of the sunflower moth.
