The interaction of polycrystalline tin dioxide with traces of water co
ntained in argon or in oxygen during repeated temperature cycling betw
een 20 and 400 degrees C has been followed by measuring in situ a.c. e
lectrical conductivity and by thermogravimetry. In an ambient with res
idual humidity, water adsorption interferes with oxygen adsorption. Th
e relative surface distribution of hydroxyl groups and oxygen species
depends on the history of the sample.
