Abstract
The induction of sister chromatid exchanges (SCE), structural chromoso me aberrations (CA) or micronuclei (MN) was investigated in peripheral lymphocytes of a group of Italian floriculturists exposed to a mixtur e of pesticides. No statistically significant difference in the freque ncies of cytogenetic damage was detected between exposed and control s ubjects. Assessment of the effect of confounding factors indicated tha t smoking affected both SCE and CA frequencies, Multiple regression an alysis showed that in heavy smokers (greater than or equal to 20 cigar ettes/day), SCE and CA levels increased significantly by 17% and 54%, respectively, as compared to non-smokers.
