The polarized infrared and Raman spectra of a single crystal of betain
e phosphoric acid (CH3)(3)N+CH2COO-. H3PO4 were measured. The results
obtained are discussed on the basis of the crystal structure. Characte
ristic spectral features due to hydrogen bond vibrational modes were i
dentified from their polarization behaviour resulting from two short h
ydrogen bonds connecting the PO43- groups into infinite chains paralle
l to the antiferroelectric axis and from two other strong hydrogen bon
ds linking the betaine molecules and PO43- groups.
