The physical processes of a superfluid helium-based particle detector
are outlined. In particular, we discuss the fluorescent production of
UV photons and the generation of an anisotropic roton flux by alpha pa
rticles. These two observed phenomena have potential use in the develo
pment of a full-scale helium particle detector.
