Pk. Muhuri et al., APPARENT MOLAR VOLUMES AND APPARENT MOLAR ADIABATIC COMPRESSIBILITIESOF SOME SYMMETRICAL TETRAALKYLAMMONIUM BROMIDES IN 1,2-DIMETHOXYETHANE, Indian journal of chemistry. Sect. A: Inorganic, physical, theoretical & analytical, 35(4), 1996, pp. 288-293
Apparent molar volumes (phi(v)) and apparent molar adiabatic compressi
bilities (phi(K)) of four symmetrical tetraalkylammonium bromides have
been determined in 1,2-dimethoxyethane from precise density and sound
velocity measurements. Limiting apparent molar volumes and adiabatic
compressibilities of the salts obtained from the concentration depende
nce of phi(v) and phi(K) data are separated into ionic contributions.
The data have been quantitatively interpreted in terms of solute-solve
nt and solute-solute interactions. Strong electrostriction occurs arou
nd bromide ions whereas the larger tetraalkylammonium ions which are s
carcely solvated in 1,2-dimethoxyethane, cause a greater degree of dis
order in the solvent structure.
