Nature of active phases in CuCl2-KCl/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst system for o
xychlorination of ethylene has been-investigated by diffuse reflectanc
e spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and FTIR spectroscopic techniques. T
he results indicate the presence of CuCl2.3Cu(OH)(2) on the surface as
the major active phase, the minor phase being Cu(OH)CI. Based on spec
troscopic data, a structural model for the active phase has been propo
sed.
