The problem of the effect of a longitudinal point impulse at the edge
of a thin conical shell is considered. The motion of the shell is desc
ribed by two-dimensional equations corresponding to the second low-fre
quency long-wavelength approximation in the theory of elasticity. They
are investigated using the matched asymptotic expansion method. The q
uasifront phenomenon in the theory of two-dimensional shells is treate
d as a boundary layer in the neighbourhood of a subcharacteristic.
