A method of solving a class of integral equations with a convolution o
ver a finite interval is developed. These equations occur in many mixe
d problems in the mechanics of continuous media and in mathematical ph
ysics. The contact problem in the theory of elasticity of pressure tra
nsfer from a punch with a strip-shaped cross-section to a linearly def
ormable base through a Melan cover reduces to an equation of this kind
. The final results are given as analytic formulae which are convenien
t for specific calculations, with isolated singularities along boundar
y-condition transition lines.
