A test rig for metrological checks of medical crank-shaft ergometers h
as been developed. The mechanical power consumed by the externally dri
ven ergometer is obtained with high temporal resolution by measuring t
he torque and multiplying it by the instantaneous angular speed. The a
ngular speed is obtained from a period measurement performed by an MS-
DOS computer with an uncertainty of less than 1 mu s. This principle a
llows erratic deviations of the power input to be detected and the tru
e mechanical power to be measured, unaffected by reactive power.
