L. Birch et H. Brandl, A RAPID METHOD FOR THE DETERMINATION OF METAL TOXICITY TO THE BIODEGRADATION OF WATER-INSOLUBLE POLYMERS, Fresenius' journal of analytical chemistry, 354(5-6), 1996, pp. 760-762
A rapid and inexpensive test has been developed to investigate the inf
luence of elevated heavy metal concentrations on the degradation of bi
odegradable plastics. Using an overlay agar technique it could be demo
nstrated that copper concentrations above 8 to 14 mg/L inhibit the deg
radation of powdered poly(3-hydroxybutyrate), (PHB), by Acidovorax del
afieldii. This is the first study demonstrating the inhibiting influen
ce of metals on the biodegradation of PHB.
