A laboratory study was performed in order to identify the possible cau
se of death in chipmunks (Tamias sibiricus) imported from China with r
espiratory disease. Severe congestion, alveolar oedema and fibrinous p
leuritis were observed. Biochemical analyses identified the causative
organism as Pasteurella haemolytica. An in vitro susceptibility test u
sing various antimicrobial agents revealed sensitivity to beta-lactams
(ampicillin and amoxicillin) and streptomycin.
