Several matrix forms for computing the area of plane polygons are give
n in this paper. The area of a simply connected polygon is computed as
a bilinear function of coordinates of vertices and as a bilinear func
tion either of signed or unsigned projections of edges. Special reduce
d forms are given for orthogonal polygons. The paper also shows that t
he area of a general polygon is a linear combination of the areas of t
wo associated orthogonal polygons.
