Methyl cellulose has been used as a stabilizer in the oxidative disper
sion polymerization of aniline using ammonium persulfate oxidant. The
dispersion polymerization is unsuccessful in water but successfully ef
fected in aqueous alcohol media. Evidence has been presented that the
stabilizer incorporation in polyaniline is increasingly facilitated as
the alcohol concentration of the medium is increased. Particle morpho
logy changes from long needle-shaped to oblong (doublets of spheres) o
r spherical as the alcohol concentration is increased from 30% to 70%.
