The mechanism of gas sensing of metal oxides containing oxygen atoms i
n the weakly bonding states has been investigated using La-Sr-Cu-O epi
taxial films as a model material. The in situ kinetic measurements of
film conductivity to monitor the diffusion of oxygen in and out of fil
ms at annealing in the different gas ambient conditions were used. It
has been shown that the gas sensing properties of oxide are due to the
reversible change of oxygen stoichiometry. The rate-determining steps
of oxygen exchange processes in the film have been separated.
