Abstract
We have derived, and experimentally verified, an exact analytical expr ession for the noise power spectral density due to double Rayleigh bac kscattering in standard single mode fiberoptic transmission systems in terms of the autocorrelation function of the transmitted optical elec tric field. The analysis is used to examine the impact of double Rayle igh backscattering on chirped amplitude modulated-subcarrier multiplex ed (AM-SCM), and optically amplified digital intensity modulated-direc t detection (IM-DD) laser systems, with and without optical isolators in the link.
