Sympathetic pathways can be assessed by using different electrophysiol
ogical tests. Sympathetic skin responses (SSR) are elicited with perip
heral electrical stimulation of the median nerve. SSR are recorded fro
m the skin of the hand and foot and from the genital skin. SSR were al
ways obtained from normal volunteers with a latency of 1 685 ms. Absen
ce of SSP recorded on the perineum is often the first sign observed in
neurogenic perineal disorders.
