A new technique for solving the scattering of a plane electromagnetic
wave by an arbitrary cross sectional cylinder is presented. The techni
que is based on solving the problem of multiple scattering of a plane
wave by N thin strips as a boundary value problem. Then, by simulating
the boundary of the cylinder by a sufficient number of strips, the to
tal scattered field can be calculated. The technique is applied first
to some of the known cylindrical geometries to check its acuuracy, whi
ch is found highly accurate. The technique is also useful for calculat
ing the scattered field of large cylinders, of known cross sectional a
rea, where the exact solution is not rapidly convergent. Moreover, it
has an advantage over other numerical and simulation techniques for pr
oblems involve sharp edges where this technique automatically accounts
for the edge diffraction.
