This paper describes three electricity and/or heat generation applicat
ions fuelled by biogas or landfill gas produced from organic waste mat
erial. It shows that aerobic and/or anaerobic treatment of the waste h
as many environmental and economical benefits especially now that poll
ution is a major international problem, and that energy cost is escala
ting not only because of the increased energy demands but also the rea
lisation that the fossil-fuel-based sources of energy are limited and
''unfriendly'' to the environment. It is noted that cogeneration is cu
rrently the most suitable energy management strategy for applications
requiring both heat and power simultaneously.
