Abstract
An austenitic 304 Stainless Steel has been surface implanted with Mo, Ne or Kr ions. The studies by electron microscopy, electron diffractio n, microanalysis and grazing incidence X-Ray diffraction show that the implantation treatment promotes the development of a ferritic structu re in the surface layers of the steel. The implantation treatment incr eases the pitting corrosion resistance whatever the ion used. Converse ly the same treatment is detrimental when the stress corrosion crackin g is considered.
