delta-Endotoxin genes cryIAb7, cryIG, and cryIX of Bacillus thuringien
sis ssp. galleriae were cloned. The genes were thoroughly studied; the
ir expression in Escherichia coli cells was analyzed. Partial sequenci
ng and restriction endonuclease mapping revealed identity of 3' ends o
f cryIX and cryIG genes; each of the toxin genes possesses a unique 5'
sequence. Sequencing of the 5' part of cryIX did not reveal any chara
cteristic elements of the translation initiation site; this fact indic
ates that in natural conditions this gene does not function. CryIG and
cryIX form a cluster. The absence of promoter-like structure from the
5' part of cryIG lets us hypothesize that both genes are transcribed
from one and the same promoter. The 3' parts of cryIX and cryIG genes
2000 bp long are highly homologous; one may suggest that recombination
events took place in the evolution of these genes
