Startup conditions are examined for a pulsed tokamak reactor that uses
only inductive plasma current drive for startup, burn and shutdown. A
zero-dimensional (profile-averaged) model that describes plasma power
and particle balance equations is used to study several aspects of pl
asma startup and shutdown, including optimization of the startup pathw
ay tradeoff of auxiliary startup heating power versus startup time, vo
lt-second consumtion, thermal stability and partial-power operations.
