Abstract
Experiments show that tokamaks can operate in various fashions. Econom ic analyses show that steady state is most attractive provided the phy sics and technology of current drive (CD) can be modestly improved. Ev en with very conservative CD assumptions a hybrid operating mode seems superior to conventional, simple inductive operation.
