We studied profile-based detectors with external pick-up strips (Iaroc
ci-type tubes) with the purpose to find out if they can be used as det
ectors of large area and high spatial resolution. In this paper we sum
marize our measurements and calculations. Contributions of different f
actors in the spatial resolution were theoretically evaluated. The res
olution of similar to 45 mu m in the proportional mode and similar to
100 mu m in the limited streamer mode were obtained in a laser beam. T
he former was limited by electronic noise and the latter by the intrin
sic streamer fluctuations. The resolution of similar to 80 mu m in pro
portional mode was achieved in a muon beam (by subtracting the electro
nic noise contribution, we estimate that the limit for our prototype w
as around 60-65 mu m).
