A hadron calorimeter based on high-pressure gas-ionization tubes arran
ged nearly parallel to the incident particle direction was built and t
ested in pion and electron beams at the CERN SPS. Data were taken in t
he energy range of 10 to 100 GeV with the calorimeter tilted to the be
am axis at angles varying from 0.9 degrees to 9.1 degrees. Results of
the calorimeter response to pions and electrons and its energy resolut
ion as a function of electric field, gas pressure, beam energy, and ti
lt angle are presented. The calorimeter was developed for the forward
region of high energy and high luminosity hadron colliders. It proved
to be simple and easy to operate. Its parameters meet the needs of for
ward calorimetry for LHC collider experiments.
