The design and implementation of an on-line parallel processing system
for the rotating positron tomograph RPT-1 are presented. A unique pro
perty of this scanner is the fact that complete projections become ava
ilable at regular intervals during data acquisition. This was exploite
d in such a way as to start reconstruction before the end of data acqu
isition. Readout of the data from the scanner, data normalisation and
image reconstruction are pipelined in separate processing stages. A tr
ansputer-based multiprocessor network and real-time operating system p
rovide a parallel environment which can evolve and scale to match the
needs of a rotating positron tomograph.
